Cabinet of Natural Curiosities

Albertus Seba’s curious creatures.

And a  most unusual collection of natural specimens…

Albertus Seba’s Cabinet of Natural Curiosities is one of the 18th century’s greatest natural history achievements and remains one of the most prized natural history books of all time. Though scientists of his era often collected natural specimens for research purposes, Amsterdam-based pharmacist Albertus Seba (1665-1736) was unrivaled in his passion. His amazing collection of animals, plants and insects from all around the world gained international fame during his lifetime. In 1731, after decades of collecting, Seba commissioned illustrations of every specimen and arranged the publication of a four-volume catalog–from strange and exotic plants to snakes, frogs, crocodiles, shellfish, corals, birds, and butterflies, as well as fantastic beasts, such as a hydra and a dragon.

Seba’s scenic illustrations, often mixing plants and animals in a single plate, were unusual even for the time. The more peculiar creatures from the collection–some of them now extinct–were as curious in Seba’s day as they are today.

This reproduction is taken from a rare, hand-colored original. The introduction supplies background information about the fascinating tradition to which Seba’s curiosities belonged.

Begin the new year with the macabre world of Edward Gorey…

The Gashlycrumb Tinies 2013 Mini Wall Calendar.

A darkly humorous look at the countless traps that lie in wait for the unwary youth—a peach, a leech, a flight of stairs, a sleuth of bears—this calendar’s thirteen rhymed couplets are a variation on the cautionary alphabets of yore. The Gashlycrumb Tinies (first published in book form in 1963, now in its 50th year!) was written and drawn by Edward Gorey, who adored silent movies, the New York City Ballet, and his cats.

Edward St. John Gorey (1925–2000) is famous for the honored bounty of books he wrote and illustrated, featuring his distinctive humor and astonishingly detailed crosshatch ink drawings. Creator of more than one hundred works, Gorey also was a successful contributor to theater from Cape Cod to Broadway; his production of Dracula on Broadway garnered two Tony Awards (Best Revival and Best Costumes). He is also well known as the creator of the animation images in the PBS series Mystery! Color artwork 7x7”.

Learn the Art of Tonal Drawing

In this DVD the Brazilian tattoo and fine artist Camila Rocha teaches the art of Tonal Drawing. This technique focuses on creating an illusion of reality by making a two dimensional image on paper that has the depth and look of a three dimensional figure.

The tutorial will cover the organizational process, the use of values, how to understand forms, shapes and the behavior of light as it falls on the subject to create a realistic impression.

The technique is introduced through a demo by Camila Rocha in which she creates a drawing based on a picture reference from the VIVA VAMPIRA! Exhibit at Kat Von D’s Wonderland Gallery.
